I started in web design before most people had heard of the internet — back when building a site meant writing everything by hand and hoping the browser didn't break it. I've been through every era: Flash, tables, WordPress, mobile-first, then the JavaScript framework explosion that made web development unnecessarily complicated for small businesses.

In and out of that world, I built things for agencies, built things for myself, and spent years watching the web design industry overcharge and underdeliver to small businesses who didn't know any better. The agencies would charge $5,000–$10,000 for a template dressed up as custom. Then bill again to change a phone number.
